Mexico, 1979 · Based in the United States
Mónica Avayou is a textile artist whose work explores the intersection of materiality, memory, and identity. Through embroidery, weaving, and large-scale textile assemblage, she constructs pieces that examine the body as a site of tension between protection and restriction.
Her practice engages with themes of the female experience, sustainability, and the relationship between the individual and their environment. Drawing from literature and philosophy, her recent work investigates memory as an active field where what is inherited, lived, and unresolved intertwine.
Alongside her studio practice, Avayou leads reading circles that function as spaces for dialogue and collective meaning-making, extending her commitment to the democratization of culture.
